BIO/ CV
Rocky Grimes is a self-taught artist. He got his start by teaching himself how to screen print in his parents garage during the 90's.Since then he has continued to push boundaries visually and conceptually.Although, Grimes's main focus is seriagraphy, he continues to explore and utilize different mediums. His recent shows have included installations of found and built objects as well as stop motion video.
Grimes also produces hand printed garments and accessories in a variety of settings. He resists contemporary paradigms of production. He has held live printing sesions at an array of locations. Locations that are on a spectrum from miniscule unannounced sessions to live printing sessions that are much larger and more public in comparison. Grimes printing sessions traverse the nation including locations in Miami, LA, Las Vegas, and New York. He even pushed a modified, found, hospital food cart through the streets of Wynwood during Art Basel holding live impromptu printing sessions as a live interactive installation known as RAW.
Rocky Grimes work is honest yet anomalous in nature. In contrast to artists who borrow from public images in order to derive content for their work, Grimes creates the images used in his art from original photographs. Thus, Grimes work does not rely on popular references to give voice to his work. Rocky Grimes has the unique ability to speak and connect with viewers in an honest yet unappologetic way, trancending societal confines.
